Workshop on Energy Tariff-based Mechanisms

This workshop will give an overview of trends in renewable energy tariff-based support mechanisms, focusing on recent findings from renewable energy auctions; present an analysis on detailed auction design options, along with analyses on case studies of countries that have launched renewable energy auctioning schemes; and present best practices and lessons learned on the implementation of auctioning mechanisms, in the form of guidelines for policy makers.

Fourth meeting of the IRENA Council

Delegates from the 21 Member States on the Council of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and other participating states will attend the Fourth Meeting of the Council in Abu Dhabi on 12-13 November 2012. Delegates will discuss IRENA’s annual Work Programme, Medium Term Strategy and other matters that will be put before the Third Session of the IRENA Assembly, in January 2013. Additional meetings and briefings on renewable energy and related topics will be held on the sidelines of the Council meeting.

Workshop "Gaps and needs in standardisation for renewable energy"

IRENA will hold a workshop with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) to address “Needs and Gaps in Standardization for Renewable Energy: Actions to facilitate the best use of standardization for renewables”. The workshop will bring together experts to discuss standardization priorities and propose concrete actions for the benefit of standards developers as well as users.

Side event at Rio+20 "Renewing Africa's Energy Future"

A side event, jointly organised by IRENA and the Government of Mozambique during the Rio+20 conference highlighted the role of renewable energy in meeting the growing energy demand in Africa. The event brought together some 300 policy- and decision makers, including 14 ministers and representatives of regional and international organisations.

Regional workshop "Building a Renewable Energy Data Framework"

The workshop was held as part of the first phase of the REDAF project, with the aim to consult with selected pilot countries to assess the status of their data collection availability and needs, and in parallel work towards the design and validation of a draft standard renewable energy data reporting template, that will take into account regional approaches and specificities.

Workshop “Renewables for Resilient Cities: A roadmap from 2012 to 2050”

The workshop was held as a co-event at the Resilient Cities 2012 conference organised by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability with the aim to bring together a wide range of stakeholders from different regions and professional backgrounds to identify common areas of concern and importance for accelerating the deployment of renewables in cities. The outcome of the workshop will be used to inform and develop priority areas for the development of IRENA’s global technology roadmap on Renewables in Cities, which will be developed in 2012.

Side Event “Multilateral Working Group on Solar and Wind Energy Technologies”

On the margins of the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) meeting in London, a workshop hosted by UK Department of Energy and Climate Change and Imperial College was held in cooperation with the CEM Multilateral Working Group on Solar and Wind Technologies. The workshop gathered some 60 experts and highlighted the following:

  • The launch of the IRENA Renewable Energy Learning Partnership (www.irelp.org),
  • The Capacity Development Needs Diagnostic for Renewable Energy (CaDRE),
  • The Global Atlas as a collaborative, international effort that is enabling the involvement of a large number of public and private contributors.

Second Session of the Assembly of IRENA

The IRENA Assembly attracted more than 800 delegates and speakers representing 133 countries and 57 organisations, and including 64 ministers and other high-level officials. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon joined the delegates to make a special address on the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) before officially inaugurating this initiative on the following day at the World Future Energy Summit.

Highlights of the two-day Assembly include the interactive Ministerial Roundtables, one held to discuss cooperation with the private sector to increase the deployment of renewable energy, and the other focusing on policy issues related to IRENA’s medium-term strategy. Other activities include the High-Level Group sessions, and technical meetings on the Global Solar and Wind Atlas, and on the competitiveness of renewable power generation. The main Assembly events were preceded by a special IRENA Pacific Leaders Meeting

Workshop “Accelerated Renewable Energy Deployment on Islands with Emphasis on the Pacific Islands”

IRENA, in partnership with the Government of Australia and the World Bank, held a workshop addressing the challenges and opportunities for accelerating the deployment of renewable energy systems in the Pacific region. Some 60 representatives and experts from Pacific island countries and territories and other small island developing states, development partners, inter-governmental regional organisations and industry participated to share experiences and state-of-art knowledge on renewable energy technology deployment in the region. The meeting identified some of the specific needs and challenges in deploying renewable energy technology and provided guidance on how IRENA can contribute best to support existing efforts.

IRENA Workshop – Scenario Models and Strategies for Renewable Energy in Africa

The “High-Level Africa Consultative Forum on Renewable Energy” which took place in Abu Dhabi from 8-9 July 2011 has provided IRENA with a strong mandate to explore renewable energy scenarios and strategies for Africa. Consequently, IRENA held a workshop on scenario models and strategies for renewable energy in Africa from 29-31 August 2011 in Bonn to prepare in-depth analysis and discuss scenario modelling and potentials for economic development. Some 20 participants took part in this informal workshop.
