History of IRENA
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) was officially established in Bonn on January 26 2009. At the Founding Conference 75 States from all over the world signed the Agency’s Statute. The founding of IRENA was preceded by several meetings that paved the way for establishing the Agency.
The first of these meetings, the Preparatory Conference for the Foundation of the International Renewable Energy Agency, took place in Berlin from 10 to 11 April 2008. At this conference, representatives from 60 countries expressed their overall support for the founding of an International Renewable Energy Agency and discussed the future objectives, activities, organisational structure, and financing of the new Agency.
Further, two Preparatory Workshops for the International Renewable Energy Agency were convened in the Paul Löbe Parliament Building in Berlin from 30 June to 1 July 2008. The workshops, attended by over 100 representatives of more than 44 countries, addressed the International Renewable Energy Agency's initial work programme as well as its Statute and finances.
Finally, from 23 to 24 October 2008, the Final Preparatory Conference for an International Renewable Energy Agency congregated in Madrid. Here, more than 150 representatives from 51 countries agreed on the Statute of the International Renewable Energy Agency. Moreover, important issues such as financing, and the criteria and procedures for selecting the Interim Director-General and the interim headquarters, as well as the design of the initial phase of IRENA, were resolved.
