Renewables play an important role in providing energy services in stationary applications in the industrial, residential and commercial sectors. Many options, including biomass, solar thermal and heat pumps can be very competitive for process heating, space and water heating, and cooling. There are also significant opportunities to replace traditional biomass use with modern biomass technologies or alternative energy sources. Forthcoming work by IRENA will look at the costs and performance of these options in detail.
Increasing economies of scale, more competitive supply chains and further technological improvements will continue reducing the costs of solar and wind power. The same factors will also boost the availability of these key renewable power sources at night and in varying weather conditions.
