Regional Workshop on Accelerating RE Investments in Southeast Asia

The ASEAN Ministers and IRENA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the realisation of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) and to facilitate the scaling up of renewable energy deployment in the region. As one of the key areas of focus under the MoU, this workshop improved the understanding of the renewable energy project financing and risk mitigation instruments, and supported the development of bankable renewable energy projects and facilitated their access to financing. The workshop was hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Trade Vietnam and jointly organised by IRENA and ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE). Participants from policy makers, financial institutions, project developers and other key stakeholders shared their experiences on current financing landscape, identified key barriers and explored how innovative finance and risk mitigation solutions can serve to attract more private investment into the region.

The 10 countries included in the regional initiative are: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Accordingly, this regional workshop on renewable energy financing and risk mitigation also introduced IRENA’s Project Facilitation tools such as Project Navigator, Sustainable Energy Market Place, Global Atlas, etc., that is a free comprehensive platform that provides the tools to facilitate the creation of robust, bankable renewable energy project proposals.
