IRENA’s World Energy Transitions Outlook recommended that a combination of technologies is needed to keep the world on a 1.5°C climate pathway. Part of the solution lies in producing hydrogen to replace fossil fuels and fossil-based feedstock for the chemical industry.
In considering how to transport hydrogen from the producer to the consumer, it has been shown that it is feasible to do so using the existing gas grid, either as a hydrogen-gas mix or as pure hydrogen. The concept of introducing hydrogen into the gas grid is new and, as such, requires gas companies to innovate how they operate the gas infrastructure and run their business. IRENA has been analysing the issues associated with this over a series of three workshops, supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK).
This 3rd and final workshop will discuss innovation required in the “softer” issues that govern, facilitate or authorise the transportation of hydrogen by pipeline (whether repurposed or new), such as government policy, regulatory frameworks, gas market rules and finance.
Registration is by invite or approval upon application. Queries to CFHydrogen@irena.org.
