The European Commission’s annual gathering of the sustainable energy community kicks off this week in Brussels. European Union Sustainable Energy Week brings together governments, businesses and citizens to discuss and debate the latest developments in renewable energy and shape the energy future of the European Union and beyond.

IRENA is actively engaged in the conference, and we’ll be sharing our experience, latest findings, and recommendations on the global energy transformation in a range of panel discussions:

Tuesday 05 June

Putting Women and Girls at the Heart of Conservation and Climate Action
16:00-17:30

International agreements on biodiversity, sustainable development and climate change present new opportunities for engaging women and accelerating equitable action. IRENA joins UNDP, the Government of Ghana, and the European Commission to discuss specific approaches to more effective, equitable and resilient outcomes.

Wednesday 06 June

EU and non-EU Islands: Showcasing Best Practice from Around the World (Presentation)

As climate change vulnerability and sustainable development challenges are becoming more apparent and urgent, islands around the globe are leading the way in renewable energy solutions and serve as laboratories for transformational clean energy shifts. IRENA, the European Commission, and the governments of the Maldives, Balearic Islands, and Reunion Island will share the latest tailor-made solutions for the decarbonisation of islands. We’ll also be presenting the various tools and platforms available to support the energy transformation in islands.

Corporate Sourcing of Renewables (Presentation)

Corporate sourcing of renewables in 2017 was almost equal to France’s total electricity demand. With the right policy framework in place, this growing corporate demand for renewable energy has the potential to accelerate the energy transition and contribute to meeting climate targets. IRENA will be joined by Google, SolarPower Europe, IKEA, enel and BT, and we’ll be sharing some of the key findings of our new Corporate Sourcing of Renewables study.

Coal Regions in Transition – Investing in Renewables (Presentation)
11:00-12:30

The energy transition is a major economic opportunity for investments, growth and jobs, bringing concrete benefits to all Europeans in the form of cleaner air, local economic development and better quality of jobs. This includes coal regions, and IRENA, the European Commission, the National Centre for Research and Technology Hellas, SolarPower Europe, the European Trade Union Confederation, the EC’s Joint Research Centre, and Senvion Holding GmbH will discuss the renewable energy potential, re-skilling issues, funding opportunities and financing needs in regions with coal mining activities in the EU. In this event, IRENA will present the latest findings on renewable energy jobs.

The Changing Landscape of Renewable Energy Financing and Support (Presentation)

IRENA, WindEurope, the Council of European Energy Regulators, CEER, and the EBRD will explore how to increase the share from renewable energy sources in EU Member States in a neigbouring countries in a cost-efficient way. IRENA will present our various support tools and platforms to foster renewable energy projects in various market contexts.
