Detailed, accurate and timely data and statistics are essential for the monitoring and evaluation of renewable energy policies and deployment . IRENA helps analysts, policy makers and the public make informed decisions by providing access to comprehensive and up-to-date renewable energy data.
IRENA publishes detailed capacity and power generation statistics covering all renewable energy technologies for every country in the world. In addition, renewable energy balances are published for some countries. This data is collected directly from members using the IRENA Renewable Energy Statistics questionnaire and is also supplemented by desk research where official statistics are not available.
IRENA also publishes detailed data on the costs and performance of renewable energy technologies. The IRENA Renewable Cost Database contains data for around 15 000 utility-scale renewable power generation projects and is being expanded to cover electric vehicles, as well as heat pumps, solar thermal and bioenergy for the provision of heat. This project-level data is complemented by a database of PPA/Auction results from over 6 700 projects and auctions.
IRENA’s statistics unit helps members to strengthen their data collection and reporting activities through training and methodological guidance. Member countries are encouraged to participate in this process.
A series of field guides is being developed to assist statisticians and enumerators in collecting renewable energy data. These manuals will include practical guidance on survey questions, field estimation and measurement techniques, how to use administrative and other data, and analytical methods.
